UNLV Takes Late Lead Over Kansas in Thrilling Finish

UNLV has taken its first lead of the game in dramatic fashion, thanks to a pair of clutch plays by Kylin James. With just 1:51 left on the clock, James powered into the end zone on fourth down, giving the Rebels a 23-20 advantage over Kansas.

The drive was sparked by a crucial play earlier, when James recovered a fumble by quarterback Matthew Sluka at the Kansas 44-yard line. Facing another do-or-die moment deep in Jayhawk territory, UNLV converted a critical fourth down, setting up a 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line. Sluka handed it to James, and the senior pushed through a pile of defenders for the go-ahead score.

Now, the question is whether UNLV’s defense can hold firm and secure one of the most significant victories in the program’s history.

It took a pair of miracles, but UNLV finally claimed its first lead of the game after senior running back Kylin James punched in a touchdown on a critical fourth down, putting the Rebels ahead 23-20 with just 1:51 remaining.

James' heroics came after recovering a Matthew Sluka fumble at the Kansas 44-yard line earlier in the drive. With only minutes left, the question remains—can UNLV’s defense hold on and secure one of the biggest victories in the program’s history?

**Kansas Leads UNLV in the Fourth Quarter, 20-16**

After a defensive battle in the third quarter, Kansas stretched its lead to 20-16 early in the fourth with a field goal. The Jayhawks, led by quarterback Jalon Daniels, managed to break through UNLV's defense after a series of stalled drives. Daniels completed passes of 18 and 10 yards, setting up kicker Tabor Allen for a 41-yard field goal.

UNLV’s offense had struggled throughout the second half. Despite excellent field position—starting a drive at Kansas' 44-yard line—they failed to convert, settling for a field goal on their best opportunity. Matthew Sluka, while making some big plays, had difficulty finding consistency, completing just 7-of-17 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

The Rebels’ go-go offense needs to find its rhythm fast if they hope to pull off a massive upset with time running out.

Linebacker Jackson Woodard delivered a game-changing interception early in the second half, but the offense couldn’t fully capitalize. With 9:38 left in the third quarter, kicker Caden Chittenden nailed another field goal, narrowing the score to 17-16.

Kansas opened the half with the ball, but Woodard’s interception on the second play gave the Rebels a golden opportunity at the Kansas 4-yard line. However, UNLV failed to find the end zone, losing a yard on two running plays and seeing a Sluka pass to Ricky White broken up on third down. The Rebels had to settle for their third short field goal of the night.

Time is running short—can UNLV complete the comeback?
